Another Hurdle for Authors

One of the negatives of being an artiste. This is an interesting article and raises some issues. There are so many organisations to purchase books from on the internet that it can be difficult sifting through the good from the bad.

Warning: Websites Offering eBooks at “Bargain” Prices

We are all aware of the risks of using sites we're not familiar with, but then I suppose that's what it's all about: Choices.

Book 2 Flight of a Changeling, Chapter 4

Another tiny piece from Book 2 'Flight of a Changeling' due to be released mid May 2013...

Chapter Four - Stables

Since the Red Moonwake that had overshadowed the city of Beldroth, heavy black storm clouds had mingled with sallow yellow skies, hovering over the heads of the citizens and threatening to unleash an almighty clatter.
‘I wish we could go to our green Willow tree,’ Leon said to Heather as she busily meandered around the stables attempting to choose a gallant horse for her travels.
The stable boy made every effort to ignore them. He busily forked clean hay into each paddock. The Head Stable Master would have his hide if he did not finish cleaning out by the time of his return. Still he could smell the end stables where he had not even had chance to start mucking out the manure because the two nobles were lingering. A deep rumble of thunder grumbled in the distance.

GUEST POST author of A Lost Memory

Today I'm very pleased to announce my first GUEST POST. Joint authorship of Lizzy Stevens & Steve Miler in 'A Lost Memory'. Available on Amazon: www.amazon.com/A-Lost-Memory-ebook

Alley wakes up in a strange bed. She has no idea who she is or where she is. Pain shoots through her head like a bolt of lightning every time she moves. As she drifts off to sleep images of a faraway land and a handsome man with sandy blonde hair and six pack abs fills her head. He keeps saying “Alley come back to me.” Who is he and how does she know him?

CHAPTER ONE - partial excerpt...

Alley lay in bed in a strange room. Glancing around nothing was familiar. Where was she? She sat up, a tingle creeping up her spine. What was going on?
Anxious to get out of there, Alley yanked away the blanket and stood. Pain shot through her head, threatening to blow it apart. Her finger pressed her temple instinctively to ease the pain. She felt a bandage taped to her forehead. What has happened to me? Where am I? No longer able to withstand the pain, she lay back down.
Drifting off to sleep, images of a young man filled her dreams. She didn’t recognize him, but he was handsome with six pack abs and long sandy blonde hair that brushed the top of his shoulders. But who was he?
Alley come back to me. The man seemed to know her, but she didn’t recognize him at all.
Alley was awakened by the sound of the door opening. She saw a woman standing in the doorway holding a ceramic bowl of water.
“Oh, sweetie! You’re awake,” the woman said as tears rolled down her face. She wiped at them as she walked over to the bed.
Alley stared at her not knowing what to say. Am I supposed to know this woman?
“Oh, Alley, I know you’re confused, honey. It’s me, Mom.”
Alley glanced around the room for answers but none came to her. “Mom?” she asked, puzzled.
“Yes dear, you’ve been in a terrible accident and the doctor warned us that your memory may be fuzzy when you came to.”
“An accident? What kind of accident?” Alley didn’t understand anything at that moment. She didn’t remember any accident.
“Honey, don’t push yourself to remember right now. We’ll talk about this later. I need to call your doctor and get him over here to examine you at once.” She turned and hurried out of the room.
Alley sat there more confused than she was before. She hoped the doctor would be able to shed some light on what was going on.
She glanced around the room and saw an antique dresser with three drawers made from mahogany. In the corner stood a full length mirror. The four-poster bed where she lay was draped in a sheer white canopy. Beside the bed was a small table where her mother placed the ceramic bowl of water. In the opposite corner sat a rocking chair with a red and white quilt folded neatly over the back. Everything looked neat and well taken care of, but none of it looked familiar.

... Doctor Monroe carried his black medical bag and set it on the bed beside Alley...
“Everything looks good Alley. I’m going to redress your wound and give you some pain medicine to help with the swelling.”
“Doctor, I don’t know who I am. I can’t remember anything. I don’t even recognize my own mother. What happened to me? What kind of accident was I in?”
      “Alley, these things take time...

Five things you don't know about Lizzy Stevens!!!!!
1. Married.
2. Two wonderful children.
3. Has a small tatoo.
4. Favorite sport = Supercross.
5. Hates house cleaning.

Chapter Four  - The End of Peace

‘My King,’ she began. ‘My Ruling Prince,’ Heather acknowledged Amos, ‘and my father,’ she finished. ‘Forgive me if I appear imprudent but I love Raphael as a brother of my own, as I do Leon and Amos. Like any other here, I would lay down my life to save him. And, it is that ....’
‘Heather you should not even be in this room’ Heimarl exclaimed in a sombre fatherly tone.
‘No father, that is where you are mistaken,’ Heather retorted. ‘My concern is for Raphael and I am the only one who can save him.’
Again, the mages were unnerved with hushed voices and red irritated faces surrounded the table.
‘I am the Changeling,’ she declared. ‘None can do this but me. I can and will save my dear, dear friend Raphael, and you must all wake up to that fact.’
She speaks the truth,’ the King quietly announced. ‘Your daughter is a brave girl Heimarl, to stand up to us with the reality staring into our faces that none of us dares to admit.’
‘She is not ready Alfred,’ Heimarl answered with fatherly concern. ‘I cannot allow this. In this room you have the highest powers of Lairkland at your disposal. My daughter is not yet a part of that.’
‘But, she is, Heimarl,’ Amos replied. Your daughter and I have already spoken of such a journey. Heather is the key and I see this as our only way. This monshaad Emperor is a threat to our way of life. As Minnah has foreseen he seeks to enter our lands, if he has not already done so in some devious way. It is time to set our plans in motion. He asks for the Changeling, well that is Heather. She is the only one. This will buy us more time to find my brother. I suspect that the captain is not going to have much luck in locating him. The Emperor would not threaten us so if he had not already captured my brother. Our time is short so, for now, we must look to be giving this cruel creature what he asks for, but we can do this on our own terms’
‘No. I forbid it. She is not to be used like this,’ Heimarl quickly defended his favourite daughter.
‘The Guardian Dragons are the answer. They also have the ability to pass through the Wall. Why not use them as a means of gaining intelligence?’
‘The monshaad Emperor has already informed me of his distrust of our friends the dragons. He will have no dealings with them,’ the King spoke wearily, wishing all this woe would just simply vanish.
‘That’s preposterous,’ exclaimed Heimarl. ‘There is no more trustworthy beast in all of Aarabassa.’
‘They are our allies Heimarl,’ King Alfred reminded him. ‘They would gladly see the end of any Dark Lands creature, as would we.’ He well remembered the voice in his head warning him to send no other than the Changeling herself or his son would return to him in small parts. He dare not share this image with any.

Excerpt, 'Flight of a Changeling', Book 2, Aarabassa World series - Out May 2013

‘What is this danger you speak of Alfred?’ Heimarl questioned. ‘What has unfolded?’
‘The news is grim telling,’ Amos replied for his father, entering the meeting chamber and walking over to stand by him. ‘My brother Raphael has been put at the greatest risk. His life has been threatened by the Emperor Morte-Bielz who Mindtalked to my father during his feverish illness. We must send out a troop of soldiers to trace Rikka and my brother. Evil is pursuing them. We cannot know if they live. until we track them down.’
Heimarl sat back down in his seat, slowly taking in all that Amos said.
When he had learned of his wife’s vision, he had quickly gathered the Head Mages and led them to the palace. Upon their arrival it had appeared as if they were expected, the King was already in the Council chambers. This could only mean that the vision had some potency.

Excerpt, Chapter 3 To Market, Fantasy tale

Coming out in May 2013, Book 2 Flight of a Changeling.

Chapter Three, To Market

...Withdrawing from his father’s chambers, he rushed off to find Head Mage Heimarl. He would entrust this task to no one else and proceeded to the abode of the mages.
A heavy dull storm threatened with deep rumblings in the distance, hiding in a murky yellowed sky. Sticky heat hung in the gloomy atmosphere. Unexpected cold chills drifted in little pockets of air and prickled the hairs when brushing over exposed skin.
Amos had reached the town not even remembering his journey there. He marched through the market square, knocking over a cage full of noisy chickens in his haste. A child’s voice cried out complaining of the cold and beseeching her mother to cover her. A whistling wind swirled, blowing up flimsy canvas covers on the market stalls. Amos’s only thoughts were on reaching his destination and then returning to his father with a full assembly of mages and in his haste, collided head on into Heather, who was hurrying towards the palace...

Get ready for Book 2, Flight of a Changeling, released in May 2013.

‘You mean the monshaad Emperor has done this?’ Amos was shocked at such a suggestion. ‘But how? His powers can’t reach to this side of the world, surely.’
‘He delves deeply into the black magics of our world,’ Heimarl was quite confident in this statement. ‘He has stirred up poisonous gasses to flow on the winds that come our way,’ he tried to explain the effects of this spell. ‘I can’t rationalise the reasoning of how this can be done, I can only tell you that this leader is growing ever stronger. I can feel the opposing nature of his magic, as if a magnetic force were trying to pull at my mind.’
‘He doesn’t like humans does he?’ Raphael questioned, interrupting the adult conversation as he shuffled onto a soft cushion to escape the hard ground.
‘I suppose you’re right about that, young Prince,’ the Head Mage agreed. ‘It was a human mage who created the barrier that imprisoned his kind forever to the darkness. He has had many suncircles to fester upon this. The overheard words of the vamplins, which the dragons have shared with us, must be taken as a serious threat. It is time to unite the realms of the Light Lands. We need to call upon our neighbours by marching upon their lands and uniting our armies.’

Excerpt Chapter 1 Book 2 Released May 2013 Fantasy

Soon to be released this May, Book 2, Flight of a Changeling. Here's a tiny taster of Chapter 1, Deception.

The King’s skin crawled with a still chill as a caress of unnerving malevolence whispered through the air and sent a shudder down his spine. He felt that he was just awakening from a dream. For a moment, he hesitated, suddenly believing the idea preposterous that his son could find such a cure. Yet, catching sight of the delightful expression on Raphael’s young face at the herb nurse’s demonstrations, how could he withhold consent for this quest? He felt compelled to agree to this madness, yet he also felt coerced somehow as if an imposing force was constraining his better judgement.

Then wet your appetite with this short excerpt from the PROLOGUE of Book 2, Flight of a Changeling - Enjoy...

Monshaads, it is understood, descend from an ancient human tribe, probably the first humans upon Aarabassa. It is not known from whence they came but these humans were enriched with the powers of magic. As the race advanced so too did the power of their inherited skills of magic and some chose to study the darker more sinister paths, giving them immortality, but not in their human forms. Such beings have abated to form an essence of foul gasses that feed upon the energy of living souls, never satiating their hunger for power. They cannot die because they are already dead. They are without a living soul, though some believe they have a dormant soul. They cannot be eaten by a serpent because they have no substance. They have no blood for the vamplins to drink. Some are weak and foul, others are stronger but still foul. Morte-Bielz is the strongest and the foulest. Few know the secret of how to rid Aarabassa of these evil entities...
